Historic Ludlow
This small market town was once described by Sir John Betjeman as 'the most perfect town in England' and it certainly lives up to its reputation. There are nearly 500 listed buildings and the medieval street pattern survives almost intact. The town prospered through wool and cloth manufacturing and Georgian houses line the wide streets and tiny Victorian houses edge the pavements. Be sure to take the town tour to really appreciate the town's history.
Ludlow Castle
The castle was built by the Normans in the late 11th century as a stronghold to keep out the Welsh. It became crown property in 1461, though it was acquired by the Earl of Powys in 1811. Edward V, Prince Arthur and other royal children were brought up at Ludlow. Each year the castle holds a variety of events and festivals.
Shopping & Markets
The streets bustle with activity. There are markets four days of the week. Farmers markets, Garden fairs and Craft markets. Antique and Flea markets are held on selected days and at weekends. The array of independent shops is a delight, selling hand crafted items, clothing, gifts, jewellery, books and antiques. There are shops displaying fine foods and gourmet chocolates as well as several butchers & bakers.
